I don't know how Cassie puts up with her frickin dad and stepmom. They're evil. And I don't even live with them. I feel bad for her.

You need to specify Cassies. And yes, her Dad obviously has no self esteem and feels the need to prove his power - by making his daughter's life miserable. My friend Helga was married to a man like this - he was jealous of his kid's and wife's accomplishments. In the end she divorced him (and went to Alcoholics Anonymous)and his two kids will have nothing to do with him. He though still feels the need to wield his power, so remarried and moved across the state, to the same town the Helga lives in - just to make her life more uncomfortable. Fortunately she is now a strong woman and recognizes him for being a psychopath. The best thing you can do is make sure Cassie knows you love and support her and do not blame her for letting down her friends, when her Dad steps in the ruin the day.
